Good morning! Today is Monday, June 23, 2025.

We have some exciting AI news today: OpenAI and Jony Ive’s hardware partnership moves ahead despite trademark bump, and Perplexity opens its AI-powered Comet browser to Windows testers. Let’s dive in!

1. OpenAI Removes 'io' Branding After Lawsuit, but Jony Ive Hardware Deal Still On

OpenAI has taken down all mentions of 'io,' the AI hardware brand it was developing with ex-Apple designer Jony Ive, due to a trademark lawsuit from hearing tech startup iyO. Despite the legal hiccup, OpenAI says the $6.5 billion deal and plans to build AI hardware with Ive are still moving forward. The original announcement and video have been pulled, but the partnership remains intact.

2. Perplexity's AI Browser 'Comet' Now Testing on Windows

Perplexity has started inviting Windows users to test its AI-powered Comet browser, previously only available on Mac. Comet uses "agentic search" to answer questions, find email content, and even simulate clothing try-ons. CEO Aravind Srinivas says the Android version is also ahead of schedule. A full release date hasn't been announced yet, but interest is growing despite privacy concerns around data usage for personalization.

3. LinkedIn Users Are Hesitant to Use AI Writing Tools, Says CEO

LinkedIn’s AI writing assistant isn’t taking off as expected, according to CEO Ryan Roslansky. He says users are wary of sounding too robotic on a platform that serves as their online resume, where backlash can affect job prospects. Despite this, AI interest is booming on LinkedIn, with a 6x rise in AI-related job listings and a 20x spike in users adding AI skills to their profiles.

4. Apple Reportedly Eyeing Perplexity AI to Boost Its Search and AI Strategy

Apple is reportedly considering acquiring AI startup Perplexity to strengthen its AI capabilities and possibly build its own search engine. The move could prepare Apple for a future without its long-standing Google search deal. Perplexity handles over 780 million monthly queries and offers real-time answers using web data. Talks are still early, and no official offer has been made.

5. Senate Advances Bill to Block State-Level AI Regulation for 10 Years

A Republican-led measure to ban states from enforcing their own AI regulations has cleared a key Senate hurdle. The proposal would withhold federal broadband funding from states that attempt regulation over the next decade. Critics argue it undermines state rights and creates a regulatory vacuum. Supporters say unified federal oversight is needed to protect national security. The bill can now move forward without Democratic support.

6. Music Industry Builds AI Detection Tech to Track and License Synthetic Songs

Instead of trying to stop AI-generated music, the music industry is building tools to detect and track it from creation to distribution. New systems like TraceID break songs into components to flag AI-generated parts, enabling licensing before release. Platforms like YouTube and Deezer are already using internal detection tools. The focus is shifting from takedowns to monetization and control of AI-created content.
